Honoring Resilience: Torie Giffin Receives Don Brown Entrepreneur Award

Updated: Aug 28

On Tuesday, August 13, 2024, Torie Giffin, owner of the Buffalo Lodge Bicycle Resort, was honored with the Don Brown Entrepreneur Award by the Southern Colorado Women's Chamber of Commerce. This prestigious award was presented during the Accolades Luncheon, which saw 600 people in attendance, all celebrating the achievements of outstanding business leaders in the community.

In her heartfelt acceptance speech, Torie shared the personal challenges she has faced, particularly her son’s ongoing battle with brain cancer. The night before the ceremony, her son experienced a seizure that required emergency medical attention. Fortunately, he is now stable, but the experience continues to highlight the immense pressures she balances as both a mother and a business owner. Despite being advised early on to sell her business and focus solely on caregiving, Torie chose to persevere with her dream. She frequently expresses gratitude for the incredible team at Buffalo Lodge Bicycle Resort, crediting them for making 2024 the most successful year in the resort’s history and helping to name the Buffalo Lodge Bicycle Resort a "Best of the Springs" hotel in The Gazette for the second year in a row.

She recognizes her strength and tenacity, drawing inspiration from her faith and the support of her community. She is grateful for the numerous resources available to small business owners, including the Small Business Development Center, the Women's Chamber of Commerce, Exponential Impact, and the SBA, all of which have played a crucial role in her success.

In a field of remarkable nominees, including Carmen Abeyta, Dr. Jo Ann Antenor, Sandi Griffin, Christine Malmborg, and Stacy Osborne, Torie’s story stood out. The event also celebrated Laura Neuman, who was named Business Leader of the Year. Laura, a friend and mentor to Torie, has been a steadfast supporter of the Buffalo Lodge Bicycle Resort, where her son, Oliver, is a beloved bartender known by locals and guests alike.

Torie’s story is one of remarkable resilience and determination. Her ability to navigate both the demands of business ownership and the personal challenges she faces is an inspiration to many. The Buffalo Lodge Bicycle Resort is more than just a motel—it’s a testament to the strength of a woman who refuses to give up on her dreams, even in the face of adversity. Torie’s journey continues to inspire those around her, proving that with passion, faith, and community support, it’s possible to create something truly extraordinary.
